San Marcos’ # 1 was honored at the Athletic Round Table luncheon yesterday. The following is excerpted from the Presido Sports post on the event:
San Marcos golf coach David Siordia finally met his match.
Siordia, speaking at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon, said he never once had a player on his team beat him on the golf course in his seven years at the helm.
Then along came Thayer White.
“And I’m pretty unhappy that Thayer White is that kid who can beat me,” Siordia said, tongue firmly in cheek. “He averaged 73 in league and 75 in all other matches. He medaled eight of 11 times this year, which is pretty unheard of.”
White shot back-to-back rounds of 1-under par 70 to win the Channel League Individual Golf Championship.
Siordia noted that what makes White’s accomplishment extra special is the fact he doesn’t play or practice as much because he plays on the varsity basketball team.
“He’s a multisport athlete. He came off the basketball court to the golf course,” Siordia said. “He doesn’t practice or play for about four months of the year and he had a great year.”
White was recognzed as the male Athlete of the Week.
Congratulations Thayer!
Thayer White’s season at San Marcos recalls the glories of past San Marcos teams. He has been a consistent #1 player all season with many excellent outings, keeping the Royals in contention in their closest matches. On Tuesday he capped it off, winning the Channel League Invitational Individual Championship at Soule Park with his second consecutive 2-under par round of 70. White leads seven qualifiers to the CIF Individual Regional Tournament on May 16 at Las Posas Country Club.
Congratulations Thayer! Good luck at Las Posas!
San Marcos defeated Buena Tuesday on beautiful day at Sandpiper Golf Club with wet conditions, but no wind. Thayer White was medalist once again, shooting a 1 over par 73!!
“We had a great round by freshman Joey Mazziotta who started off with a 9 on the first hole and played solid golf the rest of the way and shot a very nice 82. I was very proud of how he kept himself together for the entire round.”-Coach Siordia

Thayer White posted another excellent round for the Royals, carding a 71 at Montecito CC on Thursday, but the Dons, led by medalist Sean Searls’ 68, had the depth to defreat the Royals easily, with 5 players finishing under 80. John Etsell was the only other Royal to shoot under 80, with a round of 78.
Santa Barbara 375 San Marcos 405
Thayer White was once again low for San Marcos shooting a 1 over 71 at BuenaVentura Golf Course, followed by a strong 77 fired by freshman Joey Mazziotta.

Coach Siordia’s thoughts on the match: “We handed Ventura its first league win in a few years and the first win from San Marcos in probably close to 20 years. We played hard but it just wasn’t good enough. We are very young at San Marcos and the golf season is very short so its not a good combination but I feel like we are getting better each time we play. We had 3 freshman play and we had Joey Mazziotta fire a 77 so that was very promising. This is going to be a tough year in the Channel League. From top to bottom the teams are solid and there is no team that is guaranteed to win. Since 1995 its been obvious who the best team was but its going to be a lot of fun this year seeing who comes out with the best record.”
The Royals go up against cross-town rival Santa Barbara at the Montecito CC on Thursday in their second league match.
San Marcos 392 (0-1)
Ventura 377 (1-0)

Playing on a course set up for a college tournament, San Marcos finished ninth in the Oak Park Invitational on Monday at North Ranch CC, with a score of 252. Dillon Wright led the Royals with a respectable 81, followed by Thayer White’s 84 and John Etsell at 87.
Nick Thomas of Chaminade and Jonathan Sanders of New Jewish Community tied for medalist honors with 2-under par 69s. Santa Barbara’s Sean Searls finished third in the field of 92 with a 74, as the Dons finished fourth.
San Marcos opens Channel League play Tuesday against Ventura at Buenaventura GC while the Dons play Buena up the road at Olivas Links.
GO ROYALS!!

Led by Thayer White’s 1-under par 71, San Marcos scored a season low and defeated Rio Mesa at Sandpiper Golf Club on Thursday.
Royals broke the dreaded 400 mark for the first time this year, shooting 394 to Rio Mesa’s 413.
White recorded his 4th medalist round of the season.
“Thayer is playing very smart and steady golf and is getting back to his form after playing basketball,” said San Marcos coach David Siordia.
“I was very proud how my kids grinded today,” he added. “That’s all we have been talking about at practice: How are we going to get the ball in the hole in the least amount of shots?”

Thayer White shot a 75 to lead San Marcos to a 417-436 non-league boys golf victory over Hart at Sandpiper Golf Course on Tuesday.
“We struggled during our first week of competition but each player played better today,” said coach David Siordia “We had a great practice yesterday where each player had a specific task and goal. Some accomplished it and some will have to finish their task tomorrow.”
Thayer White was medalist at Tuesday’s season-opening match but San Marcos came up short against Hart at Valencia Country Club, 437-443.
White posted a three-over 75 on the 6800-yard course.
“It was a great first match for us as we learned a lot. We now know what we have to do to get ready for league play,” said Royals head coach Dave Siordia in an email.
Hart makes a visit to Goleta net Tuesday for a rematch with the Royals at Sandpiper.
